SOLAR LIGHTING FAQ
18 Nov 2015
Ever wonder why you should use solar lighting, or what the cost benefits are, or even how it all works? Solartechniq, the specialists in solar lighting, have the answers.

Notwithstanding that solar lights have been around for a significant period, Solartechniq still get a lot of questions about the operation, life, cost, etc of solar lighting systems. We believe in the benefits of solar lighting, and so should you.

To answers some of the most frequently asked questions we receive regarding the viability and benefits of solar lighting, we’ve put together this handy guide.
Why should I use a solar light?
If you need to provide exterior lighting anywhere where there is not an existing connection to the electricity grid then it is likely that a stand-alone solar system will cost less to supply and install than a comparable grid connected system and cost considerably less to operate.
How does a standalone solar system work?
Deep cycle batteries are charged by current generated by the sun. A controller manages the flow of current to the battery and when the flow of current falls below a set level (at dusk) it then directs current from the battery to the luminaire until sunrise.
How much light will a system provide?
A stand-alone solar lighting system will provide the same amount of light as an equivalent grid connected system.
How many hours will the system run each night?
Systems are usually designed to operate every night from dusk until dawn.
How much sun does the system require?
The amount of solar radiation available at a specific location, the hours that the system must operate are the primary determinants of system size. See GRAPHS System Comparison and Solar Radiation Comparison.
How is the light switched on and off?
When the current flow drops below a specified level, the controller switches the current flow from charging the battery to operating the light. At dawn when sun falls on the solar panel, the process is reversed.
How does the cost of solar lights compare to other lights?
The ten year cost of a grid connected light is at least twice and perhaps three times the cost of an equivalent solar installation. The additional costs are primarily the installation costs for underground power.
