Green walls are turning concrete jungles into lush, tropical havens and adding much-needed greenery to our cities.

Although still a relatively new concept, green walls are increasingly popping up in our cities, and it’s not just Australia that is getting into the vertical garden concept – countries all over the world are embracing these green walls and green roofs and for very good reason.

Not only do green walls add ambience and a sense of sanctuary to our urban streets, they also provide environmental and health benefits too. Green walls and green roofs increase energy efficiency and reduce the ‘urban heat island effect’, while providing other benefits such as sound insulation, air cleaning, stormwater management and biodiversity preservation and habitat creation. With so many pros, it’s no wonder green walls and green roofs are starting to take over our cities.

Many organisations have dedicated themselves to educating the public about green walls. Green Roofs Australasia’s mission is to support the rapidly growing green roof industry in Australia. The organisation’s aim is to increase the awareness of green roofs and walls and to advance and support the industry via research, development and education.

There are numerous companies who specialise in the installation of green wall systems. Elmich Pty Ltd is one such company, having recently completed a green wall installation for Hotel Michael, Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore. Thanks to the ingenuity of Elmich, what was once bare and boring concrete walls is now an oasis of greenery for the enjoyment of casino patrons.

Atlantis Water Management is another company dedicated to beautifying our cities with green walls with its Gro-Wall product.

Design Landscapes is yet another company that has added the design, supply and installation of green walls to its list of services. The company has green walls under long-term maintenance in both Australia and Hong Kong.

With so many benefits, both aesthetically and functionally, it’s easy to see why the green wall phenomenon is here to stay.

Tell us about a remarkable green wall or green roof you’ve seen. I’d love to hear about any extraordinary installation that has revitalised a city landscape.
