The new Australian garden is grown on walls and roofs, not in the ground, according to a Rural Industries R&D Corporation-funded research project.
The research is in keeping with the phenomenon that is the ‘vertical garden’, which has been gaining momentum here in Australia and overseas.
The traditional concept of the Australian garden is rapidly changing and is making way for a new breed of gardens that call the walls and rooftops of buildings home.
Not only a good way to ‘green’ up our urban cities, vertical gardens also have many social, environmental and economical benefits, with a major benefit being the vertical garden’s ability to block heat thus reducing the need for air conditioning in warm weather.
The project has identified several native plants that can readily grow on the walls and roofs of buildings.
