Being country born and bred, I’m showing my support and unbridled enthusiasm for Sydney City Farm and Sustainable Living Centre, our first working farm which is currently operating at Sydney Park in St Peters.

The idea behind this initiative is to create a green sanctuary to showcase an eco-friendly future and a place where the community can come together to grow organic food, learn about the latest in water-saving techniques, climate-friendly renewable technologies, and more.

Over summer, Sydney City Farm has been hosting the Summer Garden – a garden filled with crops and produce you wouldn’t usually find in an urban setting, and which is now in the preparations for harvesting. If you haven’t already had a chance to visit this unique use of urban space, there are plenty of fun and educational events coming up soon, which provide a great opportunity to participate and contribute to the community, as well as learn something along the way.

Saturday, Feb 9: Sheep dog trials – a nostalgic event for the whole family
Saturday, Feb 16: Scarecrow building- try your hand at making a friend for your own garden
Saturday, Feb 16: Meet a farmer – get the insider’s look at farming life
Saturday, Feb 23: Meet a beekeeper – learn about bee-keeping and the production of honey
Saturday, Mar 2: Meet a market gardener – find out what is needed to grow your favourite produce
Saturday, Mar 9: Meet a horticulturalist – learn how trickier crops are grown by local farmers
Saturday, Mar 16: Paddock to plate – get the dirt on where your food comes from! Saturday, Mar 23: Celebration/Harvest Weekend – a hoedown to celebrate the harvest of all our crops.

Even if you don’t already own a flannelette shirt, come along and support the realisation of this eco-friendly, country-at-heart, vision of Sydney.
