One of the few opportunities motorists are afforded to learn about the culture, tradition and history of the towns they travel through, is about to become a thing of the past.
Roadside stops in North America are becoming a seriously endangered part of the landscape as motorway budgets become tighter and tighter. While only 24 of 42 rest stops are operating in Virginia, just 10 of the original 34 in Louisiana are in use. Another factor contributing to the disappearing act of these roadside stops is the number of fast-food chains and petrol stations off-exit.
Before they become completely extinct, photographer Ryann Ford is making an effort to capture their spirit. Travelling as best she can across North America, Ford and her camera capture the essence of these roadside Oasis’ in a charming photography collection entitled ‘The Last Stop.’
Without necessarily having an affliction for the casual road trip, Ford’s photographs captivate the viewer in the heart warming simplicity of the surrounding environment.
A touching attempt to preserve the history of the landscape, these photographs are truly inspiring.
