SUNSHINE COAST UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL
Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) is a state of the art tertiary teaching hospital servicing the Sunshine Coast region. This high-profile project focused on using the natural environment and landscape to create a hospital that blends building with landscape, seamlessly linking inside to out.
The scope of this project involved the construction and planting of the internal courtyard within the Main Hospital Buildings, as well as 9 courtyards and gardens within the MHU and Childcare area. Roof maintenance paths were also constructed on level 2 and 3 roof balconies. The centrepiece of this project is the enclosed central courtyard, an outdoor room measuring 140x40m, which was designed to take advantage of the local climate, coastal lifestyle, and the health properties of natural air and light. The courtyard houses natural finishes including wood furnishings, stone tiles and paving, a stone wall locally sourced from Glasshouse Mountains, and artworks with lighting that replicate the natural environment through their organic shape and form.
The courtyard planting featured locally sourced mature stock, which were transplanted by the Penfold Projects team. There was also a large outdoor play courtyard filled with undulating levels of wet pour rubber soft-fall and other various play equipment, which will facilitate the needs of families visiting, patients, and practices at the hospital.
Working in conjunction with Lendlease and Place Design Group, they delivered the works at SCUH on time and to budget. This project has been an opportunity for Penfold Projects to showcase a high level of technique, landscaping ability, and high-quality finishes that will be viewed and used by the local Sunshine Coast Community, and will enhance the experience of many patients and staff.
The Sunshine Coast University Hospital project was awarded the Commercial $2million Plus award at the Landscape Queensland Awards 2017.
