VICTORIA RECEIVES INCREASED BLACK SPOT FUNDING
29 May 2017
Victoria is set to receive $13.6 Million to fix up to 50 road black spots along some of the states most dangerous stretches of road. The demand for better access control systems, roadway lighting and infrastructure systems has been recognised.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester, alongside Member for Mallee and Chair of the Victorian Black Spot Consultative Panel Andrew Broad, have recently announced the 2017-18 allocation for the state of Victoria under the Black Spot Programme.
The $13.6 million in funding will be allocated to see roads resealed, railings and adequate lighting installed, and shoulders widened, where possible, to ensure that some of the states most notorious roads are brought to safer standards. So far 50 spots have been allocated attention under the National Black Spot Programme.
In a press release, Mr Broad has stated that the latest investments within this programme will deliver safer roads in 31 local government areas throughout Victoria.
“The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has found that, on average, Black Spot projects reduce fatality and injury crashes by 30 percent, so every dollar we invest in safer roads helps to change lives and save lives,” said Mr Broad.
“…the Black Spot Programme is a crucial part of improving the safety and efficiency of roads right around the country. By fixing and upgrading road locations where crashes are occurring through safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts, we are helping to make our local roads safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” he said.
