BRIDGING THE RESERVE
8 June 2016
The recent edition of a steel truss pedestrian bridge to the 3rd Settlement Reserve in Winston Hills has made use of the park safer and easier thanks to the efforts of Moodie Outdoor Products.
Moodie Outdoor Products has recently completed the installation of a pedestrian bridge for Parramatta City Council at the 3rd Settlement Reserve in Edison Parade, Winston Hills. The galvanised steel bridge was completed with Roocycle decking to create a sturdy structure that makes accessing the reserve safer and easier for visitors to the area.
The Riesling steel trussed footbridge was provided in pre-fabricated kit form from Outside Products and was made from hot dipped galvanised steel trusses, bearers and joists to ensure longevity. Measuring a total length of 14m, the new footbridge was delivered to site and assembled by Moodie Outdoor Products in one day. The bridge was then craned into place and securely bolted down.
Once the bridge was secured, decking boards and balustrades were installed over a 2 day period. Roocycle decking from Moodie was selected as the decking board of choice for the bridge due to its long-lasting zero-maintenance benefits. Roocycle is also slip rated to Australian Standards.
Roocycle profiles are extruded in common shapes, dimensions and lengths, have rounded corners, no splinters and a long-life surface. The boards are UV stabilised to ensure a lasting look for projects while also being termite and white ant resistant. Thermal stability prevents freezing with a low expansion rate of less than 1%. Roocycle is also able to be manipulated using traditional woodworking tools to dress, cut, drill, plane and rout, and is non-toxic, so it won’t leach into the environment.
With an estimated lifecycle of 80-100 years, Roocycle materials are suitable for all construction projects and are so versatile in nature that they can be used as garden edging or to create street furniture, bollards and bins, as well as structures such as bridges, boardwalks, viewing platforms and stages.
The 3rd Settlement Reserve pedestrian bridge has been fully engineer approved and has been designed to withstand flood conditions. To comply with flood loading requirements the bridge was designed with collapsible balustrades so that in the event of a flood the total load on the bridge and its abutments is reduced.
