One of the oldest universities in Australia has embraced the future with the installation of an innovative boardwalk made from plastic that would otherwise go to landfill.
Federation University Australia, commissioned two major pieces of infrastructure for their Ballarat campus. Replas worked with Structures by Design, SJ Weir and Collins Design Engineering, to create an elevated bridge, as well as access ramps and decking. The structures are made using Enduroplank™ decking combined with a composite fibre sub-structure.
Situated next to the iconic ‘tree of knowledge’ at the university, the project showcases the possibilities with recycled products. Phil Collins, Facilities Manager at the University, said they considered “both steel and timber as traditional materials”. After discovering recycled plastic it was chosen because according to Phil, “given the low maintenance and that the product was made from recycled materials, it ticked all the right boxes”.
