MODULAR VAULT CONSTRUCTION
22 Mar 2017
Envirodomes now offer a prefabricated building form with a vault construction system. Using a modular arrangement, these prefabricated forms can be assembled onsite to create small or large spaces, above or below ground.
Envirodome’s newest prefabricated building form is a precast component system of cross-vaults that provide a quick and economical alternative to site construction.
Barrel vaults intersecting each other at right angles is a construction technique used extensively by Romans and other ancient civilisations. Envirodome’s new modular vault system revives those elements and the inherent advantages.
The renaissance of the vault technique is unique to Envirodomes. No other similar products are available on the market.
Each module consists of four ‘leaves’, bolted together and supported on a central column. The prototype is 5m x 5m (6m x 6m also available). Any number of modules can be connected to provide the required floor area. Internal volume is variable, depending on need, with column heights from 2m to 6m. Bolted together, modules can be buried below ground, or stand above ground with earth covered green roofs.
Each leaf in a module consists of 1m3 of concrete and has a minimum life expectancy of 100 years. Onsite assembly poses minimal disruption to site environs, as no construction is required and no scaffolding needed. Envirodomes are also thermally stable and energy efficient.
Envirodome’s vault system construction has the inherent characteristics associated with pre-cast concrete, making the structures durable for all conditions and suitable for above or below ground use. In addition, this new product is multi-directional, providing a greater range of applications.
Potential applications include:
- Cellars
- Grottos
- Shade structures
- Community refuges (unlimited numbers)
- Carparks below elevated parkland/playing fields
- Galleries
- Private collections
- Cisterns
- Housing
- Multi-use spaces below buildings
- Commercial spaces
- Green Roofs
Committed to environmental responsibility, Envirodomes’ moulds can be used repeatedly and are completely recyclable.
Currently, the Envirodome team is preparing for the first installation of their new prefabricated vault system structures, which are to become underground cellars at Flyfaire Wines in Woomargama, NSW. This project will require complete project involvement by Envirodomes, from documentation to supply and install.
