360-DEGREE NETTED TERRAIN PLAYSPACE
21 Jul 2022
The pristine coastline of Mooloolaba is now home to the first mesh-like net playspace in the Southern Hemisphere. Demonstrating architectural excellence, the 360-degree design beckons people to climb and adventure the netted terrain, offering a one-of-a-kind play experience.
Sunshine Coast Council engaged the help of award-winning playground designers, Urban Play to create a custom designed playful, architectural landmark. The three-dimensional netted surface which is stretched over 8 m high masts demonstrates incredible height and a challenge for children to overcome and explore. Spanning over 22 metres in diameter, the tension engineered net represents the form and function of the surrounding ocean.
When interacting with the netted terrain it sways and bounces with movement as to replicate the rolling waves on the shoreline. Its structural transparency ensures the surrounding foreshore is not lost amongst the structure with snippets of the oceanic landscape peeping through the net.
Children are provided with endless ways to climb the structure developing logical thinking, creativity and cross-body coordination. By endeavouring the climb to the top of the netted structure, children are also developing muscle and bone strength and confidence. Once at the top of one of the four peaks, adventurers are rewarded with incredible oceanic views of the Mooloolaba foreshore, as well as a one-of-a-kind place to hang out and socialise with others.
Below the net, a myriad of sensory experiences that are magnified by artistic design and childrens imagination enhance the lower level play experience. Visual dichroic plates create an amazing colour pattern that is casted onto the sand softfall below and sound shakers offer an auditory play sensation. Membrane chill seats are dispersed below the net, gently swaying as the net moves, providing a place for play and to observe the climbing above.
This bespoke landmark has been enjoyed by children and families since its opening and is part of Sunshine Coast Councils stage one of the Northern Parkland project. The custom play structure is located opposite the beach and serves for a great day out with family and friends to enjoy the great outdoors together. With accomodating picnic table, barbecues and a grassy area allows family and friends to set up a nice beach side spot for the day. Murphy's Builders, Place Design Group and AECOM were also engaged by the Sunshine Coast Council to bring this project to life.
