ACO STORMBRIXX®
08 May 2018
ACO StormBrixx® is a versatile stormwater management system that works as a standalone system or as part of an integrated Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD). Find out how it can be used in your next landscaping project.

As cities develop and grow, large swathes of land are being covered in impermeable pavements that increase rainwater runoff. This, in turn, places a greater strain on stormwater systems and their connecting waterways, ultimately to the detriment of the environment.
The sustainable management of surface water is an essential part of the planning process. The first step should be an assessment of the hydrological demands of the project. The landscape’s topography and typical rainfall levels will then dictate the appropriate surface water solution. However, quantity is not the only consideration; urban designers must manage the quality of the discharged water that has been captured and stored.
Plastic geocellular systems are a widely-accepted infiltration and detention system, and have been a popular choice for many years. These systems can discharge stormwater at a slower and more natural rate, which not only protects the entire water-management system, but also increases flow to connecting waterways and prevents erosion. The water can also be cleared of pollutants, debris and sediments, making it suitable for reuse on parklands, sport fields, commercial agriculture and residential gardens.
ACO StormBrixx® is specifically developed for easy access and maintenance and includes three-dimensional access for inspection and maintenance without sacrificing the system’s structural integrity. The patented plastic geocellular design provides the perfect solution for surface water retention, detention and infiltration. StormBrixx® HD is the best choice for heavy-duty applications while StormBrixx® SD is perfect for medium duty applications.
ACO is a world leader for stormwater management with the StormBrixx® system due to a wide range of benefits.
Structural Integrity
StormBrixx® is strong yet lightweight, featuring a patented brick bonding and cross bonding design. The structural integrity and durability has been independently tested and includes a quick and easy-to-install tank.
Access, Maintenance and Low Construction Depth
The open-cell structure of StormBrixx® allows easy access for CCTV and jetting equipment, ensuring the entire system can be inspected and maintained from a small number of access points. There is a range of access chambers to choose from. StormBrixx® has a unique pillar configuration that gives it a high void ration of 95-97 percent. This will minimise the amount of excavation required to meet your nominated design storage volume and reduce the quantity of aggregate needed for backfilling.
Simplified Handling and Logistics
Delivery, site logistics and tank installation are all simplified thanks to the stackable design of StormBrixx®. Consequently, this also reduces the system’s carbon footprint. There are a number of methods for system assembly in order to create an open bonded structure.
Recent Case Studies
ACO StormBrixx® was recently installed in St Maria Goretti Primary School, Western Australia, as part of their recent building upgrade. The school grounds had drainage issues and the designers needed a high capacity, durable stormwater management system in order to address it. They chose StormBrixx® to collect and filter the excess water so that it could be slowly released back into the water table.
At the University of Canberra’s Public Hospital there was an issue runoff from the carpark pavements. Two separate ACO StormBrixx® tank systems were installed to resolve this. The first was an infiltration system; the second was a detention system designed to mitigate deluge from a storm event by spreading the peak flow of water over a longer period. In conjunction, these tanks prevent surge effects in downstream water systems.
ACO isn’t only a supplier: they can provide the expertise to assess any project and offer products to best manage each phase of water drainage, from capturing stormwater to releasing it. They can supply structural calculations specific to the project, illustrations for the installation and a bill of quantities, along with high-quality technical documents. ACO offers this service without charge or obligation.
When installed in conjunction with ACO’s other drainage products, StormBrixx® is the ultimate choice for drainage. It collects, cleans, holds and sustainably releases stormwater.
