AN URBAN POCKET OF GREEN
12 Aug 2015
Urban horticulture has come a long way since the installation of the obligatory few street trees and a planter box in the main street. Scapeworks Australia is pleased to be a part of this evolving landscape.
These days, best practice for developers and local councils includes construction designs that incorporate tracts of green space on podiums rising above ground level. This has implications for the broader horticultural community by presenting another marketplace for plant sales, a logistics challenge for installation, and a requirement for different plants to the residential garden sector.
Scapeworks Australia is pleased to be a part of this changing landscape and working on projects that are changing the face of Sydney.
One such design that has impacted the City of Sydney is the East Village Apartments, Zetland. This site is one of the largest greenspace installations accompanying private residential buildings in the Sydney Metropolitan Area. The site is situated in the middle of an extremely built up area to the south of the city.
John Abdallah from Green Fern Landscapes won the contract to install the landscape design for this development. The design covered over 6000m2 of landscaped garden, most of which hovered above the ground on various building levels, with the main garden situated on the sixth floor of the complex.
Plant choices for a green roof or podium environment are extremely important due to the harsh conditions that they will be forced to endure. The palm trees in this design were installed already established. As they were planted in shallow media, the ballast for them was important so that the wind didn’t topple them as they became established.
Another integral component to the East Village site was the specialised media provided by Scapeworks'. The growing media was required to be lightweight, long lasting, able to support plant growth, and able to be easily installed into difficult to access areas.
John from Green Fern Landscapes said, “We asked Scapeworks to make up a mix that would be able to meet all the criteria the specifications suggested. We are really happy with the way it was installed and the testing the mixes went through.”
Jon Moon, Managing Director of Scapeworks, said that his staff installed more than 4000m3 of lightweight planter mixes and B Horizon mixes into the site.
