The Huntley Street Recreation Centre will be located in a former industrial warehouse in Alexandria, transformed into a beautifully designed public recreation centre for sports loving locals.
The stylish new centre will include:
- 4 indoor multipurpose courts for basketball, netball, futsal, volleyball, gymnastics and badminton
- seating for spectators, reception and administration areas, a kiosk and change rooms
- outdoor flexible courts for practice sessions
- a fitness space, a landscaped public area and bike parking at the front of the building.
The centre has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind. Solar panels will cover the entire rooftop to generate power for the facility and opportunities for natural lighting and ventilation have been identified. Rainwater will also be collected, stored and reused on the site.
Gunyama Park Stage 2 is expected to add an extra 6,300 square metres of green, open space to the site. The expansion includes a skate plaza, a playground and an amenities block, which will complement the City of Sydney’s award-winning pool, recreation centre and outdoor synthetic football pitch.
The Gunyama Park project is set to introduce over 150 new trees, contributing to the City of Sydney’s goal of achieving at least 27 per cent tree canopy cover by 2050. Additionally, a new tree-lined road will provide more than 25 parking spaces to the east of the park.
The amenities block will include toilets and change rooms for teams using the football pitch, while the park will feature water and nature play elements, a playground, a lawn area and shade canopies.
Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore emphasised the community’s passion for sports and expressed a desire to provide ample spaces for training and play.
“Part of a healthy community is having access to nature,” said Moore. “As more people move into our area and density increases, it is vital we provide these public facilities so our residents can maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.”
Construction is expected to be completed by early 2026, weather and other conditions permitting.
