CREATE A DROUGHT-TOLERANT NATIVE GARDEN WITH TALL TREES
22 Oct 2020
After last year’s Summer, Tall Trees understands how important it is to have a garden that can both survive Australia's harsh climate and never go out of style.
Tall Trees grows an extremely diverse range of native plants that can bring many benefits to your garden. This includes a higher drought tolerance than other plants, lower maintenance, an attractive habitat for native birds and animals and, with a little bit of planning and research, some form of flower and colour in your garden all year round.
With new varieties being developed every year, Tall Trees offers an abundance of native trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers that can be combined together to create a stunning garden. Read on to find out more about some of these native plants.
TREES
A giant gum tree may not appeal to everyone but there are many modern grafted varieties that mimic their larger siblings at a much smaller size. Corymbia citriodora “Baby Citro” is a lemon scented gum that instead of growing to 30+ meters, grows only to 5 meters. It retains the lemon scented leaves and smooth white trunk of the giant Corymbia Citriodora but is perfectly sized for Australian domestic gardens. Providing a little bit of shade, the tree grows beautiful bird attracting masses of white flowers in spring and lush green foliage.
GRASSES
If your space requires an extremely low maintenance grass that rarely needs trimming, then the Wingarra® Lomandra is the perfect choice. A form of confertifolia developed by Ozbreed®, the beautiful thin blue-green foliage moves with the breeze and only grows to a height of 30cm. Ideal for smaller gardens, the grass grows small yellow flowers in late Spring.
GROUNDCOVER
Instead of looking at mulch, or raw earth, why not fill the gaps of your garden with a native groundcover. Purple Fusion™ Scaevola humilis is a fast-growing ground cover that will produce beautiful small purple fan flowers nearly all year round. Only growing to 20cm tall, it won’t compete with your other native trees and shrubs and will fill in all the gaps giving great coverage and protection from weeds.
