CUSTOM DESIGN FOR SCRIBBLY GUM
12 Aug 2015
Street & Garden Furniture Co., together with Anembo Consultants, designed and delivered a specialised suite of custom furniture and structures to make Scribbly Gum Park the place to be in Pelican Waters.
Street & Garden Furniture Co. (S & G) are a team of industrial designers who specialise in urban design and street furniture. Their expertise in and understanding of materials and manufacturing produces creative and efficient furniture design solutions. S & G offer unique services from design through to manufacture and supply.
S & G work in collaboration with architects and designers of all disciplines to develop creative design solutions that support and enhance overall project goals. The inspiration and rationale behind each design is unique to individual sites, becoming integral to the site’s identity.
In March 2015, in collaboration with Anembo Consultants, S & G delivered a specialised suite of custom furniture and shelters for the newest park at Pelican Waters in Caloundra, QLD. Members of the Pelican Waters master planned community can now enjoy an all-ages, all-abilities park, furnished with custom seating, picnic table and bar settings and shelters. These pieces are complemented by other urban elements of the park including signage, bicycle racks, barbecues, rubbish bins and S & G's newly released DELTA water stations.
The coastal location of the project called for premium finishes with high durability and low maintenance. S & G were able to design and deliver a solution to meet these requirements, with all products locally manufactured. All furniture is compliant with the Sunshine Coast Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual (LIM).
The overarching rural/coastal theme of the design is evident in the Scribbly Gum motif used, which takes cues from local flora and the robust 'chunky' sizing of timber slats and framing sections, providing a solid appearance. The organic nature of the 'twisting spline' frame is explored in various forms and repeated throughout the suite. This creates a unique and interesting public space that visually 'shifts' in a dynamic way as users engage with and move through the park.
The furniture was delivered in March 2015. Project collaborators include Anembo Consultants (landscape architecture) and Rixon Design (lighting design).
"We just wanted to say how well the landscape and built forms work together at Scribbly Gum Park; in particular the Scribbly Gum motif and its integration in the furniture and shelter elements." Peter Rixon | Rixon Design
Due to the overwhelming success of the design S & G are currently working on future stages for this project.
