TOWER OF FUN

A giant play tower forms the imposing central feature of this fun and contemporary playground in Victoria’s Yorkdale Estate.

Located in Yorkdale Estate in Victoria, Central Park is a towering example of the achievements of adventure+. A generous park that offers residents a range of recreational opportunities, including junior and senior playspaces, sheltered areas, picnic facilities, walking paths, wetlands and kick-about ovals, Central Park is a real community hub.

Working closely with Thomson Hay Landscape Architects and developers Costa Property Group, adventure+ conceived a design that would create the ‘icon’ statement the developers desired; a point of difference from other constructions in the area. This was achieved with the installation of a giant 6m tower at the heart of the playground, which offers a strong presence in the landscape that can be seen from a
distance when approaching the park.

In order to create the imposing height of the play tower, adventure+ utilised their spectrum+ hybrid system, which combines steel uprights with timber cladding. Perforated metal panels were used as additional cladding, utilising designs of Australian native flora and fauna. The use of timber in the structure contributes a ‘natural’ element, while the use of lime-green accents gives the playground a fresh, contemporary feel.

Extra play value was added to Central Park with the inclusion of swings, rockers and slides. An enclosed tunnel slide begins at the highest platform of the tower, weaving down to the ground, and the Gyro Swing, mound slides and rockers in the playspace add extra interest, and ensure the playground has something for everyone.

Thomson Hay Landscape Architects enjoyed working with adventure+ through the whole process from design to construction. And adventure+'s willingness to push design boundaries, attention to detail, and helpful communication throughout the project helped achieve a high end result.
