A new public space has opened in Whittlesea that includes a new playspace of epic proportions.

Located in the suburb of Lalor, just outside the Melbourne CBD in Victoria, Whittlesea Public Gardens is an inviting outdoor recreation hub that has recently undergone a major renovation. The heart of the community for decades, these public gardens now better reflect the current and future recreational needs of the local community.

Serving to reenergise the area and provide a host of modern amenities that encourage users to get active and enjoy the outdoors, Stage 1 of the newly refreshed Whittlesea Public Gardens multimillion dollar refurb includes a generous new playspace furnished by play equipment specialists Urbania. Working in collaboration with Glascott Landscape& Civil, Urbania provided design and construct services for all the timber play structures.

As the Australian distributor for Richter Spielgeräte, Urbania is an industry leader in nature play. Utilising sustainably sourced, handcrafted, premium products, the company was able to custom design a unique playspace to meet the client’s expectations.

Designed to ensure young players of all ages are entertained for hours, the new playspace centres around a giant five-level Richter Spielgeräte timber play tower with ladder and rope challenges galore. From the dizzy heights of the top floor, climbers can use the speaker to chat with friends on the ground before sliding their way down the giant twisting slide.

A second smaller, yet no less fun, tower sits to the side, perfect for the littlest adventurers. Set atop gently sloping mounds covered in vibrant orange and yellow softfall surfaces, this mini fort is connected to the main tower via a fun rope bridge. A double-wide slide sits beside the small tower, ensuring adults can get in on the fun or kids can slide side-by-side.

A wheelchair-accessible carousel and double flying fox, rope climbing unit, swings, in-ground trampolines, rockers and nature play elements complete the fun for the new playspace. In addition, a learn-to-ride track provides plenty of active fun for bike, skate and scooter enthusiasts of all abilities.

The use of sustainably forested timber is perfect for the Australian environment, ensuring longevity for councils, and embraces the perfectly imperfect unit unique.
