GET A LOAD OF THAT MOAT
09 Jun 2022
Scientific Waterproofing supplied and installed a flexible, fully submersible waterproofing membrane to a concrete moat at the Shine Dome in Canberra.
The original structure was constructed 63 years ago and was in need of reinstating some of its components. The brief required that the waterproofing be:
- UV stable
- Withstand abrasion during cleaning with brushes
- Non-toxic as to not harm the wildlife in the area
- Consistent texture and colour throughout
- Sufficiently flexible as to accommodate movements caused by the significant seasonal changes in Canberra.
The repairs were completed using Scientific Waterpoofing’s Drizoro Maxgrout product. A single component non-shrink, mortar formulated product from special cements and well-graded mineral products. Drizoro Maxgrout provides a high mechanical strength and contains no chlorides or metal particles. Produced in a powder form that is ready to use when mixed only with water.
As the deadline approached the substrate on the moat could not dry properly due to environmental factors. Waterproofing was initiated using two coats of Drizoro Maxseal flex, a flexible cement based waterproofing membrane that is able to withstand nine bar (90 metres) positive, and a four bar (40 metres) negative hydrostatic pressure when applied to wet concrete or masonry substrate. The Drizoro Maxseal flex meets AS 4020, meaning it is drinking water safe.
A single coat of Drizoro Maxurethane 2C was applied after the substrate was dried. Maxeurthane 2C is a two-component aliphatic polyurethane coating which is fully submersible and provides protective, flexible and very strong resistance to abrasion once polymerised. It is highly resistant to weathering and UV with a long-term colour stability in outdoor areas.
