ODS E-News talks to Darren Mason, Chief Operations Officer of Andreasens Green, about the success of the wholesale nursery.
How and when did you get into the wholesale nursery business?
I was working as an apprentice gardener in local government when I saw the ad for an Assistant Manager at Andreasens Wholesale Nursery in my local paper. I applied for that job, way back in 1983 and was successful in gaining the position. This month will mark my 29th year with Andreasens Green.
Can you tell us a bit about your background – education, experience etc.?
I started out studying horticulture at Ryde TAFE, before moving onto a post grad in Landscape Design and more recently a Business Management Course. I started as an apprentice, worked my way up to an Assistant Manager, and then went on to become General Manager. I believe I have developed a thorough understanding of the business because I have literally worked at every level within the business. My current role is Chief Operations Officer with Andreasens Green. I have had some fantastic opportunities along the way - it’s been a great ride so far!
How and when was Andreasens Green established and can you tell us a bit about the company – major projects worked on, awards won etc.?
Andreasens Green was established in 1981 on a 5 acre site at Lansvale in Sydney’s Southwest. Today, the business has grown to 150 acres production nursery, with growing sites across NSW and QLD. Andreasens has cemented itself as a major supplier to the nursery and landscape industry. We have been proud to be involved in a wide range of projects that have helped to “green” Australia. We have been involved with many projects over the years including the exporting of stock for projects in Dubai and Hong Kong. We’ve recently been awarded the contract for the supply of plant material for Barangaroo Headland Park.
You recently celebrated 30 years in business, what do you think has contributed to the success of Andreasens Green?
Our people (The Green Team) are what makes our business successful. There are a number of long time employees who have contributed a good part of their working life to the business. We have built great relationships with our clients over the years and are renowned for our persistence and adaptable attitudes whilst having fun along the way.
What is your design philosophy when it comes to soft landscaping?
It is important to involve all parties who are contributing to the landscape and have open and shared discussions on the plants, design and possible changes to improve or assist with the project.
What’s planned/coming up?
This year is full on with some major projects including Barangaroo and the Green Wall at Broadway, plus the expansion of our Mangrove Mountain nursery site.
