LOW MAINTENANCE GROUNDCOVERS FROM OZBREED
29 Oct 2020
If you are looking for ‘no-fuss’ groundcovers perfect for any outdoor space, Ozbreed offers a selection of unique options.
Yareena™ Myoporum Parvifolium
Whatever the aspect or requirements of the site, there is an Ozbreed groundcover to suit every occasion. Whether it’s their long-standing, reliable players such as Aussie Rambler™ or Yareena™, or their more recently released Blue Horizon™ or Aussie Flat Bush™, tried and tested Ozbreed groundcovers do all the hard work, so that you don’t.
Providing many different benefits, groundcovers can bind the soil and ease erosion, help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds by acting as a living mulch and add to the aesthetic of a traditional garden setting by defining a garden bed’s perimeter. Ozbreed’s breeding innovation in groundcover has resulted in several new commercially released species that will liven up the ground level in any residential or public landscape design.
YAREENA™ MYOPORUM PARVIFOLIUM
Yareena™ Myoporum parvifolium has been a popular groundcover choice in premium residential design since it was released due to its performance and longevity compared to the common form. The cascading habit, dense coverage and deep olive-green foliage of groundcover compliments sloping sites. It’s a native so it handles Australia’s extreme climate and the masses of white flowers contrast well with both native and exotic plant selections. Pruning is only needed every three years, or it can be left to its natural habitat to form a low shrub.
Aussie Rambler™ Carpobrotus glaucescens
SLENDER BELLS WHITE™ PANDOREA
Selected for its ground hugging tendencies, fullness of foliage down to soil level, and its pretty white tubular flower, the Slender Bells White™ Pandorea is a tough Australian native, widely known as a climber in its common form. If given something to climb, the groundcover will head north, but if left to spread it will reach widths of up to 2m while staying low, with very little maintenance required.
AUSSIE FLAT BUSH™ RHAGODIA
Commonly known as saltbush, the tough Rhagodia spinescens is native to every Australian state and territory. Specified by designers for its shapely grey-blue foliage, it fits in with the dry and Mediterranean garden styles that are currently popular. While it can be controlled with no more than two prunes a year, it will stay low and bun-shaped if left unpruned.
BLUE HORIZON™ EREMOPHILA
Available in WA, VIC and SA, the tidy blue-grey foliage of the plant forms a dense ground cover with less gaps than the common form. Requiring a prune only once a year, the groundcover brightens a winter garden when it gets covered in brassy coloured, tubular flowers.
Blue Horizon™ Eremophila
STAR JASMINE, WESTRINGIA, ALTENANTHERA AND PIG FACE
An Australian landscaping industry groundcover story wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Ozbreed’s key contributions. Having been around for over a decade, they are the hardy go-to’s of the groundcover options regularly embraced by Landscape architects and designers for their reliability, performance and weed suppression.
THE FLAT MAT™
A Trachelospermum asiaticum, the plant has faster prostrate growth than the common variety to achieve coverage quicker. Durable and tough enough in the most extreme conditions, it suppresses weeds and quickly spreads with less pruning.
LOW HORIZON™ WESTRINGIA
A dense, low growing plant that is covered in white flowers in spring, the plant has a flat habit and short internodes that makes it Ozbreed’s most compact Westringia. Occasional pruning will result in increased density and better weed suppression. Its foliage adds textural contrast to other westringias or shrub layers in the garden.
LITTLE RUBY™ ALTERNANTHERA DENTATA
A dwarf version of the common form, the ground-hugging year-round burgundy foliage contrasts beautifully with the green foliaged forms in the landscape. It handles climatic extremes with irrigation, making it a great, reliable choice for a mounding and spreading groundcover.
AUSSIE RAMBLER™
A Carpobrotus glaucescens cultivar that tolerates heavier soils than its common form, the native succulent creates a dense matt that can be useful in erosion control situations. Drought tolerant and extremely low maintenance, its giant flowers brighten the glaucous foliage from late winter through to the summer months.
