NATURAL PLAYGROUNDS FOR SMALL SPACES
09 Jun 2022
One of the biggest issues in getting a new playground installed is finding the right location. Particularly in schools, space can be tight and many areas need to be multi-use!
Timber Creations transform the areas many wouldn’t consider – turning an awkward unused space into a natural discovery playground!
The latest installation at Frenchs Forest Public School shows how this can be done, taking a garden area between a path and cricket nets, and creating a space for active play, imagination and social games.
A small space may not have the luxury of large fallzones, but that doesn’t mean climbing isn’t possible. Creating opportunities for low climbing, balancing and horizontal challenges close to the ground are great ways to get children developing their motor skills in a restrictive area.
Using the natural features of the area add to the play value and illicit imagination for future nature play in the wider environment. In this playground, tree roots were used to create a fairy garden, and an existing stump forms part of the balance trail. This is also a great way to conserve space as you do not have to segment the playspace away from the existing features of the playground.
Natural logs and a varied low balance challenge course reduce the risk of a fall and develop much needed foot-eye coordination in children. Students develop greater physical awareness, decision making, confidence and muscle control as they adapt to the changing shapes of the footholds and climbing systems.
A reduced space does not mean reduced play value! Many activities can be achieved without the need for height and consequent fall risks. Natural playgrounds are better for developing minds and bodies. The award-winning team at Timber Creations create amazing natural playgrounds in almost any area you can find!
