NEW PONTOON AND SHADESAIL FOR ANGLE BEACH
29 Nov 2023
AR+R was contracted to provide a turnkey project for the installation of a new 47m long pontoon and a 7m x7m Shade sail over the Pool area, at the group’s boutique Angel Beach, Yasawa Island, resort.
The pontoon had to be long enough to be usable in low tide, strong enough to moor the resorts fleet of boats and had to be stable enough to land a three-ton helicopter on it and of course deal with the annual cyclones that come through the place from time to time.
Due to the remoteness of the site planning had to be meticulous and as simple as possible with only the use of handheld equipment possible. HULK Guy anchors and Hulk Underwater anchors were chosen as the preferred method of securing the Shade sail and pontoon because they require no concrete or excavation and are ready to use immediately. All equipment and gear were shipped from Sydney and Brisbane and was delivered to the island by boat. Local villagers assisted with the project.
The Shade sail and shade sail components were installed in a morning and two anchors were installed on each corner.
The pontoon segments were floated from the boat to the install site and once anchored to the beach were built into the sea one segment at a time. Twelve sets of hulk anchors at equal spaces, along with elastomeric tethers hold everything in place. The Hulk underwater anchors were installed from the pontoons using hydraulic handheld equipment without causing any significant damage to corals and then tethered to the underside of the floats using local help. Its amazing how long the islanders can hold their breath for - literally minutes. Works were articulate with no hidden surprises and AR+R finished the project two days ahead of schedule.
The HULK anchor system was the winner on the day making a complex project simple.
