NEW TERRAIN FOR STREET FURNITURE
27 Feb 2020
A suite of street furniture from design and manufacturing company botton + gardiner looks to the verve of the urban landscape to meet the open space needs of a diverse public.
Public spaces alive with people, pulsing with life and everyday encounters, was the vision for Terrain, with a picnic setting and matching seat designed inhouse by botton + gardiner that reflects the vivacity of the local urban environment and its inhabitants.
botton + gardiner believes public spaces are living environments linked to the wellbeing and vibrancy of local communities. This includes people with disabilities that have the need and the right to access amenities in public spaces used by the community.
To meet this objective, botton + gardiner strives to achieve demographic diversity through good design. By incorporating the accessibility criteria set out by Australian Standard 1428.2 into its furniture, the company aids usage by a wider demographic of people, those often overlooked in public space furniture design.
The Terrain furniture collection connects at this junction between simple functionality and purposeful design, to meet compliance specifications.
Although the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliance is related to a site’s accessibility as a whole, rather than single pieces of furniture, units that abide by AS1428.2 guidelines will aid the overall site to achieve DDA compliance. The Terrain seat meets key compliance specifications in seat and backrest height, backrest angle, armrest height and radius to the front edge of the seat.
Made locally in Sydney, the attention to detail is integral to the design of the Terrain collection. The trapezoid shapes of the solid hardwood battens are reflected in the flare of the leg and the angle of the armrest. The elegant radius of the arm tip reappears where the battens meet the frame. Stunning, sustainably sourced hardwood bestows Terrain with an aura of sophistication, while the two-part, interlocking frame, steel outrigger and thickness of the battens creates the structural strength and stability to cope with the unique durability demands of public spaces.
Hand in hand with picnic settings and seats in public spaces, comes the need for litter bins for waste disposal. Stylish, co-ordinating waste receptacles is the finishing touch on a carefully designed and considered project.
botton + gardiner is proud of its extensive range of litter bins, bin housings for wheelie bins, and cigarette bins. For options that pair beautifully with the Terrain range, check out the Avoca, Bellerive (pictured), Bondi, Bronte, Scudo, FGP and Coogee bin options.
