NORTHERN BEACHES CHRISTIAN SCHOOL BY KOMPAN

With this ethos firmly in place, the school embarked on the creation of a cutting-edge playground, recognising the need to kindle a love for learning both within and outside the traditional classroom setting. To bring this vision to life, KOMPAN and Play by Design were handpicked as the play partners for this transformative project.

Tim Watson, the Principal of NBCS, is an advocate for a holistic approach to education. Within the school's strategic plan, actionable measures included the establishment of world-class play facilities, aimed at inspiring students to cultivate a genuine passion for learning while nurturing their physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

“We love learning here at NBCS, and we love it inside and beyond the classroom. What we’ve been working on … is to ensure that the campus is the classroom – inside and out,” said Tim.

Since the inauguration of this unique playground, it has sparked unbridled enthusiasm among students and parents alike. The resounding approval of this new space is coupled with a noticeable increase in physical activity levels during recess and lunch breaks.

At the heart of this remarkable playground is the bespoke Sky Walk x Jellyfish COROCORD play structure. Its transparent design invites children to challenge themselves by climbing and exploring the structure from all angles. The high-capacity, flexible climbing net not only fosters physical strength but also encourages social interaction, as children feel the presence of their peers who are also navigating the ropes. Valuable life skills such as teamwork, cooperation, and empathy are instilled as they take turns and assist each other during their ascent and traverse.

The expansive platform and suspended pommels within the Jellyfish serve as an ideal socialisation point for groups. Inside this unique structure, children not only unwind with friends but also develop crucial social-emotional skills such as self-regulation. Meanwhile, as they descend the rope column or glide down the slides to the lower level, they refine their balance and build bone density, developing essential motor skills.

In the junior play area, a split-level hub awaits, offering enthralling embankment play that thrills and allows children to develop vital physical and proprioceptive skills while forging bonds with their peers as they climb and slide together. Amidst the rubber mounds that ignite young imaginations, classic jumpers remain a favourite among school-aged children. These Jumpers with small footprints serve as connecting points between the junior and senior play areas, facilitating weight-bearing activities that promote bone density development and key motor skills such as rhythm and balance.
