PLAIN SAILING WITH SVALSON
30 Jan 2019
With the installation of an innovative glass balustrade from Svalson that offers wind protection without impeding the view, Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club can now offer patrons the best in alfresco dining all day.

It is a universal truth that a frisky wind can cause havoc with an afternoon of leisure. Businesses that are able to offer their patrons sweeping views and dining areas open to the elements are often a popular spot. But not so great when a relaxing moment is interrupted by a brisk afternoon squall!
While many people like to sit out on the deck of a nice restaurant or club and enjoy the view, unpredictable weather can force them inside, or worse, home, before they are ready.
Experiencing just such a dilemma, the Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club took action to protect their business by installing a glass balustrade system from Svalson.
“We had looked at a number of other products over the years but nothing has come close to the Svalson product in terms of ease of operation and overall benefits. With our deck sitting out over the water and copping the full brunt of often strong nor’easters, the windbreak needed to cut the breeze while still allowing our customers to enjoy full 360-degree views of Manly Cove. The barriers have done exactly that and have been a fantastic addition to our business,” claims Matt Hazell, Secretary Manager, Manly 16ft Sailing Skiff Club.
After a full makeover in 2014, the deck of the club become a popular place for patrons to while away an afternoon taking in the ocean views with a glass of wine. Sadly, as most afternoons get windy, club members and guests were often forced indoors. Seeing the decline in business – with many patrons leaving the club to go elsewhere for dinner rather than battle the winds – the board agreed a permanent solution was needed. After seeing the effectiveness of the Svalson wind barriers placed on the deck of Hugo’s in Manly, they agreed this was the system they needed to provide protection on their deck and create a more comfortable environment for their members.
Suitable for domestic and commercial markets, Svalson glass balustrades are easily raised by hand, from standard balustrade heights up to 2.1m, effectively blocking the wind but allowing patrons to continue enjoying the view. Ideal for restaurants, cafes and pubs on balconies, decks or patios, this innovate system increases the usability of any outdoor area.
Installed just in time for the holiday season, the new Manly Sailing Club balustrades allowed members and guests to enjoy the festivities regardless of the weather. Since their installation, Management has recorded a noticeable increase in traffic as patrons spend more time outdoors and choose to stay and dine, enjoying the comfort of the outdoor deck without the fear of blowing away – making it a smart investment on the club’s behalf.
“The benefit to our business has been immense and instant,” states Matt. “On a typical summer evening, we would lose customers off our deck as soon as the sun went down as it was just too cold with the breeze blowing off the water. The day the barriers went in, we saw our customers sitting out on the deck enjoying dinner and drinks until we closed. This trend has continued since day one and has easily added thousands of dollars to our sales and more importantly our bottom line.
“I would highly recommend the Svalson product to anyone considering it and cannot fault David Gray for his attention to detail and great customer service,” he adds.
