PROTECTING OUR BELOVED NATURAL ASSETS THROUGH EFFECTIVE EROSION CONTROL
01 Dec 2022
While unpredictable and extreme weather events are increasingly becoming the norm, they are at the same time, increasingly worrying. If left unchecked, the extensive damage caused to beaches, creeks, parks, and treasured amenity areas will have a detrimental impact on our way of living today and in the future.
Find out how Benedict Sand and Gravel are helping protect our natural environment through effective erosion control methods.
To mitigate the impact of erosion on beaches, rivers and waterways, and the communities who live near them, councils are leading the way with prevention and stabilisation works, employing natural sandstone products and landscaping materials. With the right design and material selection it is easily possible to preserve erosion-prone areas, get a great looking end product and protect these natural assets for local residents and visitors to enjoy for years to come.
Hawkesbury Sandstone Boulders and Spalls are the material of choice for councils to help solve municipal erosion problems. These natural and endemic stone rocks and spalls are commonly used for various design elements to minimise loss and control the erosion process.
In Sydney’s south, Sutherland Shire Council have selected sandstone boulders sourced from Benedict Sands, Sandy Point to build a three-meter high seawall in their effort to stop foreshore erosion at North Cronulla Beach. Following the advice of NSW Department of Planning & Environment’s Biodiversity, Conservation and Science team, 6,768 tonnes of sandstone boulders were deployed to build the wall, which was constructed by specialist contractor, The Rix Group.
Apart from protecting the environment, the natural aesthetic of sandstone boulders also lends them to decorative applications, making them a popular choice for discerning architects, civil engineers and landscapers. Common applications for Benedict sandstone boulders (available from their Sandy Point, Appin and Belrose quarries), include retaining walls, water abutments, car park barriers and landscaping. The boulders come in a wide range of sizes, including Oneman, Twoman, Bobcat and large rock sizes exceeding 1200 mm. For those looking for something special, there is even the option to handpick exactly the right boulders directly from the quarry.
The sandstone spalls are great for non-structural gabion basket fillers, creek bed and bank linings and bridging layers in new estates where rising water is a concern. They are offered in sizes 75 -200 mm and 150 – 300 mm.
