REVITALISED CENTRAL HUB
01 Dec 2022
PTA Landscapes were engaged by Mount St Josephs Girls’ College to design and construct its new Central Hub.
Previously working on the Northern Communal Garden at the girl’s college, PTA Landscapes has completed the second major project at the school, Central Hub. Central Hub is the heart of the school and needed an upgrade from its outdated structures and landscaping. The intent for the redevelopment of Central Hub was to create a seamless and continuous connection between buildings and opportunities for passive gatherings, as well as act as a central meeting point within the school.
Using natural walking lines and linear structured landscaping, Central Hub has been transformed into a lively social space for many school activities. Within Central Hub, different surfaces indicates each spaces intention. Granite paving draws attention to building entrances while exposed aggregate and synthetic turf recognise the intended gathering areas.
Included in the complex is a large custom outdoor kitchen featuring two beefeater flat barbecues, sink and servicing space and locked under bench compartments. The outdoor kitchen is a suitable cooking area for school functions such as sausage sizzles and pancake days.
Central Hub also features a multilayered shade canopy that reflects the school colours, insitu walls, precast concrete furniture and piazza style umbrellas. The central focal point of Central Hub is located at the raised spotted gum deck with sandblasted steps, raised timber clad planters, fixed seating and a large urban canopee. Representing the perfect spot for socialising at lunchtime or studying in the great outdoors.
Alongside, seating and shade structures, Central Hub features a variety of plant life. From citrus plants and flowers that add to the lively and colourful atmosphere, to low level Australian native and exotic plants that provide an abundance of greenery, to raised planters that maximise floor space and have less interference with high traffic areas; Central Hub is a haven for plant life.
PTA Landscapes were responsible for managing the entire works of the project from planning and design to project management and construction. The project was awarded the 2022 Commercial Landscape of the Year at the Victorian Landscape Industry Awards.
