SANDSTONE FLAGGING

The use of sandstone flagging to create a natural take on the modern garden.
Sandstone flagging, while an old classic, never goes out of style. Flagging or flagstones are random split pieces of sandstone which are non-uniform in shape, size and thickness, and were used extensively in heritage properties.
Used in this project to surround the edges of a pool, the random shapes of the flagstones contrast the uniformity of the backyards rectangular form, and accompanying house and veranda. While sealing the stone around chlorine and salt is a must, the naturally cool and non-slip stone is timeless.
The sandstone flagging used on the stairs melds easily into the garden. As plants are added and mature the stairs will appear as a natural part of the landscaping, supporting the verdant surrounds. The natural stone path invites the visitor to meander along a winding trail, flowing with the natural rise and fall of the land.
The circular fire pit design makes the most of the radiant heat. Sandstone is a natural fit as its fireproof nature retains heat. By utilising non-uniform shapes, the flagging softens the sharp cut edges of the circle and the square sandstone block seats, resulting in a more natural aesthetic.
