SKATEPARKS THAT ENCOURAGE DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVITY
29 Sep 2022
Now more than ever, diversity and inclusivity are at the top of the list for urban landscape structures and skate parks are no exception. See how GX Outdoors incorporates its inclusive and innovative outdoor furniture and structures into the Walla Street Skate Park in Bundaberg.
Located in the heart of beautiful Bundaberg, the impressive Walla Street Skate Park is a testament to the new era of inclusive skate parks that encourage diversity.
Bundaberg Council’s intention behind the selection of infrastructure for Walla Street Skate Park was human-centred; promoting inclusivity and diversity.
The council devised a key stakeholder consultation group and a community-wide survey to help understand the practical applications of how they could facilitate health and wellness benefits from the space, as well as promote social inclusion.
This was key in informing not just the holistic design of the skate park, but the smaller aspects of the space, such as the design of the shelters, bike racks, bins, and table settings from GX Outdoors.
It’s these details and designs that were key in fulfilling the park's inclusivity and diversity goals.
For example, the street style tables are not only Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant for wheelchairs, but are made from recyclable aluminum manufactured completely in Australia. The tables encourage diversity, but also facilitate an environmentally friendly skate park that supports the Australian economy and strengthens Australia’s sovereign supply chain.
Similarly, the shelters (Akora Cantilever Shelter), bins (Street Style Dual 240l Bin Enclosures) and bike racks (Atessa Bike Racks) featured in Walla Street Skate Park, are all made in Australia and built from recyclable materials.
“Council wanted to work with the community to build an area that was useable by any and all, no matter what age or skillset”, Councillor Vince Habermann.
By placing an importance on these design elements, councils are able to facilitate spaces that encourage diversity and promote inclusivity.
