SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S TOP LANDSCAPES CELEBRATED
28 Jul 2018
"Building stronger healthier communities for people" - The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) have announced the winners of the 2018 South Australian Landscape Architecture Awards. Read all about the winning designs here.
In 2018 there are 24 entries across categories including Civic Landscape, Infrastructure, Play Spaces, Parks and Open Spaces, Tourism, Urban Design, Gardens, Small Projects and Future Leader.
Awards were granted to projects that demonstrate high quality design thinking, leadership and outcomes that have shaped our cities and neighbourhoods and realised health, social and economic benefits of greener, open and more accessible public spaces.
Some of the key winning projects include: Willunga Mainstreet Project that has transformed the town centre into a beautifully crafted setting that evokes Willunga’s natural history, local stories, settlement past and contemporary future; Mukanthi Nature Playspace at Morialta involving collaboration with Kaurna elders and an Indigenous artist, Allan Sumner to deliver genuine inclusion of Indigenous cultural narratives; and the Adelaide Riverbank Precinct Public Realm with design elements including urban green arbours, garden spaces, a flexible performance space, a playful water-feature, urban streets, laneways, courtyards and much more.
The expert Jury noted that in this year's submissions, in order to deliver multiple project outcomes, there was a consistent focus by the design teams: people. Entries included play spaces focused on the physical and mental development of children and the creation of meaningful memories; major infrastructure works addressing the human scale; places for contemplation and healing; streets for people; and across all projects, opportunities to connect with nature.
“People are at the core of everything landscape architects do. When we focus on the needs of people, spaces become places; they become social, and culturally rich; they require comfort and amenity, and in turn offer health benefits and improve well-being; they teach custodianship of the environment; and can encourage investment and economic stimulus.”
Entries received are testament to the incredible breadth of the landscape architecture profession and the diversity of skills that landscape architects have to offer. From major civic and infrastructure projects to small scale interventions, landscape architects continue to contribute positively to the quality of life in our cities, suburbs and regional areas,” commented the expert jury.
“The 2018 Awards again demonstrate the diversity of ways Landscape Architects are making positive contributions to the quality of life for all South Australians. Each project demonstrates the important role Landscape Architects play in building stronger communities, through a focus on quality in design, collaboration and built outcomes,” stated Ben Willsmore – State President, Australian Institute of Landscape Architects – SA Chapter.
The projects receiving an Award of Excellence and a Landscape Architecture Award at state level proceed through to the national awards, to take place in the Gold Coast in October as part of the 2018 International Festival of Landscape Architecture.
