STYLE YOUR GARDEN
07 Aug 2018
Garden designs go in and out of style, but there are some that last forever. Native gardens are often described as messy, however a well-designed native garden can look stunning and yield many benefits if time and thought are put into species selection and placement.
TREES
While not everyone can accommodate for or wants a giant gum tree in their landscape, there are modern grafted varieties that mimic their much larger siblings, but only grow to a quarter of the size. Corymbia citriodora ‘Baby Citro’ is a lemon scented gum that, instead of growing to 30+ metres, only grows to five metres.
This gum retains the lemon-scented leaves and smooth white trunk of the giant Corymbia Citriodora but is perfectly sized for Australian domestic and local commercial gardens. It provides a little bit of shade with lush green foliage and gorgeous, bird-attracting masses of white flowers that bloom in spring.
GRASSES
There are so many beautiful Australian Native grasses that it can be hard to select which ones to use. One of Tall Trees’ personal favourites is Wingarra® Lomandra. This is a form of confertifolia, developed by Ozbreed®, an extremely low maintenance grass that rarely needs trimming. It features beautiful, thin, blue-green foliage and a smaller, compact form that only grows to 30cm high. With small yellow flowers that bloom in late spring, this grass is the perfect choice for smaller landscapes.
GROUNDCOVER
Instead of looking at mulch or raw earth, why not fill the gaps of your landscape with a native groundcover. Purple Fusion™ Scaevola humilis is a fast-growing ground cover that will produce beautiful small purple fan flowers nearly all-year-round. Only growing to 20cm tall, it won’t compete with your other native trees and shrubs, and will fill in all the gaps in your foliage, giving great coverage and protection from weeds.
There is an abundance of native trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers that you can bring together to create a stunning garden. With new varieties being developed every year, offering higher drought tolerance, lower maintenance and an attractive habitat for native birds and animals, with just a little bit of planning and research you can ensure that flowers and colours and featured in your landscape garden every season on the year.
Tall Trees grows an extremely diverse range of native plants, including a large selection from the Ozbreed® Range, so get in touch to see if they can help turn your next garden landscaping project into a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant native habitat.
