29 Jun 2023
Celebrating natural, low impact architecture, a recent installation at the annual temporary pavilion design event, Under the Canopy, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia unveiled a sustainable bamboo pavilion design that can be reused after the installation.
Street Urchin by Building Trust International one of the many pavilion designs unveiled at Under the Canopy features 500 bamboo baskets skilfully woven together over one week to create a curved shade solution.
The material of choice for Street Urchin is baskets made of bamboo to draw on Cambodia’s rich ancient tradition of basketry. The use of bamboo also ties into allowing visitors to understand the potential of low impact, locally available, natural materials for modern architecture.

Providing a positive social impact after its installation, the bamboo baskets were donated to the local community and members and beneficiaries of Friends International. By repurposing the materials of the pavilion, it avoided generating waste and allowed the community to remember the unique design and make use of the installations components.
