SUSTAINABLY SOURCED STREET FURNITURE
14 May 2020
Furphy Foundry develops industry-leading outdoor furniture that is not only stylish and functional but also includes sustainably sourced materials. Take a look at the materials used.
HIGH-DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE) FURNITURE
HDPE has a low impact on the environment. It is lightweight and extremely durable, making it a highly versatile product. It is manufactured from industrial sources, pallets and car bumpers with little to zero waste, as scraps or off-cuts are recycled and re-recycled.
It is a low-maintenance, sturdy material, ideal for varying shapes and configurations, and comes in a variety of colours. HDPE is extremely resistant to mould, bacteria, mildew and insects, and has a service life expected to surpass that of timber.
WOOD PLASTIC COMPOSITES (WPC) FURNITURE
WPC is an environmentally friendly, highly durable and versatile material. It is made from wood fibres, plastics and inorganic filler materials, although more typically it is manufactured from a 50/50 blend of wood products and plastics.
The composite material, also known as eco wood, is not only low maintenance but can be made to look like wood. WPC is a sustainable bioproduct that can be recycled to create brand-new WPC.
The composites offer better mechanical properties than traditional products, with superior rigidity and strength compared to other plastic materials.
WPC also has improved weather-resistance and lower maintenance requirements compared to traditional timber.
100 PERCENT RECYCLED ALUMINIUM CASTINGS
Furphy Foundry manufactures its castings using 100 percent recycled aluminium to produce high-quality, long-lasting and low-maintenance products.
Sourced from a specialised aluminium recycling company, the scrap is supplied by dealers to produce a large range of aluminium alloy ingots. The particular alloy produced for Furphy Foundry is called DA601 in Australia.
Recycled aluminium uses only five percent of the energy needed to create new aluminium and emits only five percent of greenhouse gases. It is for these reasons that approximately 75 percent of the aluminium ever produced is still in use today.
