Taronga Zoo is one of Sydney’s most iconic attractions. Boasting over 4000 animals in 340 separate species, a ferry service to the city centre, and an exciting cable car ride, it’s no wonder this fantastic zoo brings an average of 1.8 million visitors every year.
As such a popular location for Australians and tourists alike, Taronga Zoo undertook a major redevelopment project of the Main Entrance Plaza. The plaza, when completed, featured restored heritage-listed buildings, Indigenous artworks, and new facilities such as the Zoo shop, café, information kiosk and ticketing services. It was also designed to appear larger, brighter, more open and more welcoming, as well as provide more car parking spaces and better access to bus services.
Due to the high volume of guests and the use of occasional trolleys, the Zoo chose ACO to provide the drainage services. ACO’s KlassikDrain K200 with Heelsafe® Anti-Slip ductile iron grates were the ideal product as they provide highly efficient drainage for large spaces and an environment that is safe for heels, making it friendly to all guests.
The KlassikDrain is a general-purpose trench drain system available in 100mm (K100), 200mm (K200) and 300mm (K300) internal width with either galvanised or stainless-steel edge rail. All systems have 40 metres continuous slope. The drain features a wide choice of grates, from mesh to the Heelsafe® Anti-slip grates, and up to Load Class D (AS 3996). They can be used anywhere from carparks to shopping centre drainage, making it a highly durable and effective drainage system.
Other products used for the Taronga Zoo Main Plaza upgrade included the ACO Cablemate® polymer concrete pits with Rhinocast® access covers with brass decorative edges. ACO’s Polycrete® pits feature exceptional insulation properties, high mechanical strengths, chemical resistance, and zero water absorption which makes them ideal as electrical and communications enclosures. They have a vast range of lids and access covers available, up to Glass G (AS 3996), and are more lightweight and streamlined than most concrete pits.
ACO is one of the leading brands for drainage systems across a wide range of locations and needs. Taronga Zoo is the perfect location to demonstrate their high quality and durable drainage products.
