TERRAGRATE FRP ROOFTOP PAVILION

Creating outdoor space in an inner-city neighbourhood was achieved quickly and elegantly with a TerraGrate FRP Rooftop Pavilion.
This rooftop pavilion in Fitzroy creates an outdoor entertainment space, shade and privacy for an existing townhouse but could easily be reinterpreted for use in more public locations. The pavilion was manufactured entirely offsite from a faceted steel frame and panels of durable TerraGrate lightweight composite FRP Grating.
The 5x9m pavilion was craned into location and installed in half a day with minimal disruption to the neighbourhood. It is supported by a cantilevered steel structure that sits separately from the existing roof. This modular design required minimal alteration to existing structures. The lightweight FRP acts as a structural element that only requires support on the two external walls, reducing the overall dead weight.
FRP composite grating is stronger and lighter than steel mesh and was easily cut to exact shape during the offsite build, making it perfect to achieve the complex geometries required by the design. By avoiding steel mesh, the project eliminated the need for difficult steel manufacture and the risk of major delays should a measurement be wrong or require reworking.
The TerraGrate FRP panels incorporate a built-in non-slip surface for extra safety and were manufactured to exact colour requirement for added aesthetic appeal. Because FRP is lightweight yet robust it lends itself to being easily lifted into this elevated and exposed position.
The perforated TerraGrate FRP panels minimise overshadowing to surrounds while ensuring a perfect balance of filtered sun and privacy for its users. The pavilion offers views across the city skyline and provides a versatile space for cooking, dining and relaxing. And, it also has its own built-in plunge pool!
