THE COOLEST COURT IN MELBOURNE
14 Mar 2023
Guests can stay cooler and play longer thanks to CoolTop technology on the Park Hyatt’s new rooftop tennis court.
The Park Hyatt in Parliament Place, Melbourne, has long been renowned for its elegant and lavish suites. Though a high-end property, its rooftop tennis court had seen better days. Considered unsafe for patrons, the existing synthetic surface court was shut down. Wanting to revitalise the space and once again offer court amenities to its guests, the Park Hyatt commissioned California Sports Surfaces and installation contractors Matchpoint Systems to upgrade the area.
The project brief called for the transformation of the existing court into a new surface that would provide better playability for guests, as well as improved wear. The solution? A robust cushion acrylic: Rebound Ace Air Cushion.
With a need to overcome risks of moisture ingress, heat generation from the existing surface, mould and fungus growth potential due to the rooftop environment, as well as acoustic considerations to the floors below, the Rebound Ace Air Cushion system was the ideal solution.
Comprising a floating mat lay system, the Rebound Air Cushion surface offered all the benefits needed to successfully transform the Park Hyatt rooftop court. The 7mm prefabricated rubber mat floats over the substrate, allowing for movement in the concrete joints without telegraphing through the seamless playing surface. In addition, supported by a fibreglass overlay, the system provides superior acoustic properties due to the air layer between the rubber and concrete base.
Completing the project is California Sports Surfaces’ revolutionary topcoat surfacing, CSS CoolTop. The infrared reflective nature of this acrylic sports coating reduces the court surface temperature via solar reflectance, ensuring player comfort.
CSS CoolTop works to negate the effects of the heat island impact in urban environments, making it a positive initiative for the sports industry and allowing sport enthusiasts to engage in physical activity for longer. While this product actively reduces heat absorption on the court’s surface, making play possible for longer, it also contributes positively towards net-zero, sustainability goals and reduces carbon emissions. And it comes in vibrant colours!
The Park Hyatt court was coated in a lively Nordic Blue and Ice Blue combination, making it not just cool but also aesthetically pleasing and, given it is a rooftop court, a subtle display when viewed from above.
Creating an end result that ticks all the boxes for form and function, the Park Hyatt management team were extremely satisfied with the final result. Able to offer their guests a much-needed physical outlet in an urban environment, the court refurbishment completed by California Sports Surfaces and Matchpoint Systems was considered a worthwhile endeavour.
