ASHGROVE WEST VILLAGE

The Ashgrove West Village Precinct Project’s conceptual focus was delivering places for people. The local community was consulted and involved at the initiation phase of the project. The majority of the feedback supported improvement to the overall streetscape amenity with planting providing greenery and shade, creation of new spaces to sit and linger, establishing better connectivity through the centre and celebrate local character and sense of place with specially commissioned artworks and architecturally designed shelter for the bus stop.

The existing generic bus shelter offered a unique opportunity for renewal, forming the hero of the wider village revitalisation. The new shelter’s striking form seeks to acknowledge and amplify the local character and history of the site. Enlisted by M3 Civil and Archipelago, Benzini Precast Concrete created the new bus shelter, inspired by the simple elegant forms of the heritage shelters dotted throughout Brisbane’s inner suburbs and the building forms and overhead awnings seen in the precinct.

The technically-difficult design was created with ease by the Benzini team, with the structure reflecting the local character and the eclectic architectural design context of Ashgrove West. The detailing of the shelter features, textures, materials and forms abstractly reflect the local heritage bus stops, the Sugar Cane Arcade and the Art Deco Montvue buildings creating a modern twist on a classic Brisbane suburban form.

Fundamentally, the West Ashgrove Village Revitalisation choreographs memorable journeys and experiences in its creation of place-focused moments and places that are actively fostering diverse and regular occupation throughout the week and weekend, both day and night. The project was highly technical and the precast concrete finish Benzini delivered was world class!
