ODS: Open Space Insights interviews thought leaders in the public space industry. Brad Jensen from StraBe talks challenges, eco-conscious initiatives and how the public space arena has changed.
Q What are the three biggest challenges facing your industry in 2023?
A The three biggest challenges facing our industry in 2023 is a very important question. The first challenge is the lack of skilled workforce available, which continues to have a huge impact across the growing industry. Secondly, construction companies in financial trouble collapsing, which in turn is putting increased pressure on trades and delaying completion of projects. Last, is supply chain restrictions. Manufacturers are still busy with extended lead times from suppliers. This is delaying delivery of products and hence delaying completion of critical infrastructure projects.
Q What opportunities do you predict for the growth of your industry in 2023?
A There is huge opportunity within the industry for growth in 2023 and 2024. As the cost of living has increased and is putting pressure on communities, it is ever more important for councils and facility managers to choose low-maintenance products to reduce the burden on maintenance and repair budgets. There continues to be spending on new public space infrastructure, which will continue to keep the industry very busy into 2024.
Q What eco-conscious initiatives is your industry considering or implementing to ensure environmental sustainability?
A Eco-conscious initiatives within our industry are critical. Over the last decade our industry has made a huge impact by using eco-conscious materials within our products.
At StraBe, we are continuing to expand our Second Life Initiative, which recycles used hardwood from seats, benches and tables. These repurposed materials are finding a new life by being made into various timber toys, serving trays, cubby houses and much more through Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) programs, which has a great secondary social benefit.
Q What is unique to your company this is not being widely done by others in your industry and why is it valuable?
A At StraBe we have increased our inhouse manufacturing to cover the majority of our production processes. StraBe has invested heavily in high-end machinery and exceptionally skilled tradesman to ensure we can deliver great products that are strong and stand the test of time. We deliver the best value for money to our clients and ensure that 95 percent of our product is Australian made.
Q Who is your target audience and what is it you want them to be most aware of regarding your industry?
A StraBe has a huge target audience, from landscape architects to local government facilities managers, building project managers and landscape contractors. The most critical aspect of our industry that I feel clients need to be most aware of is the detriment to our public spaces from imported and inexpensive products.
While some may look fantastic, they will not stand up to Australia harsh environment. Do your research, ask to see samples and, above all else, stick with Australian-made whenever possible.
