APPLE

Apples are proven winners in the garden. They will grow in full sun to part shade and in a wide variety of soils, although they do prefer moist, heavy loams. Fleming’s apple trees are available as Trixzie® miniature trees, dwarf trees, traditional size, Ballerina® columnar and as multi-grafted trees.

APRICOT

The natural habitat of the fruiting apricot is around East Asia. They are hardy and thrive in localities with a long, dry spring, but apricots can be grown successfully in most southern and not-so-dry areas of Australia. Apricots bloom very early and frosts may damage the flowers.

The staff at your local nursery or garden centre are best placed to help you select cultivars suitable for your area. Apricots grow to a medium-sized, multi-branched, spreading tree. Apricots are usually self-pollinating and the fruit will be starting to mature around Christmas time.

CHERRY

Cherry trees provide ornamental value in addition to tasty fruit and will enhance any garden. They are noted for their attractive dark green foliage, shiny, dark reddish-brown bark and clusters of white flowers in spring. Another feature is the autumn colour in the rustic tones of orange, yellow and red.

Cherries prefer a cool, temperate climate that is relatively free from rain during the fruiting season, however, fruit will set satisfactorily in many areas of Australia providing cross-pollination (where it is required) is adequate. Some cultivars of cherries supplied by Fleming's Nurseries are self-fertile.

Your local garden centre or nursery will be in the best position to advise you on the suitability of your area for growing cherries.

The cherry tree is vigorous when young and grows to a multi-branched, medium-sized tree and prefers full sun. Suited to a wide range of well-drained soils, they mostly grow upright and slightly spreading.

NECTARINE

Nectarines picked straight from the tree are a delight to eat! They come in white and yellow flesh colours and are self-pollinating. Nectarines can be grown in containers and are ideal for ‘duo’ or ’trio’ planting with many having lovely spring blossoms.

Over the past several decades, significant changes have taken place in the variety of nectarines available in Australia and this is reflected in the range available from Fleming's Nurseries, which includes newer white and yellow flesh nectarines and also the very sweet, low acid 'Arctic Rose' white flesh.

Nectarines are also available as Trixzie® miniature fruiting trees.

Nectarines grow to small, multi-branched rounded trees and are well suited to any size garden. They are hardy, but require full sun and do not like heavy, poorly drained soil. They prefer the temperate regions of Australia but will also grow in the warm temperate and cool temperate areas. Nectarines may require some spraying for leaf curl and information on this should be obtained from your local nursery or garden centre.

PEACH

PEARS

European pears, although somewhat slow to come into full production, will provide a valuable source of fruit from the home garden when mature. They are at their best if picked from the tree when slightly under-ripe, held in the refrigerator for a week or two and then taken out and allowed to ripen before eating. When ripe, the flesh becomes smooth.

Several types of European pear are available from Fleming's from the smooth-skinned 'Williams' to the delicious but heavily-russetted 'Beurre Bosc'. Pears are ideal for heavier soils and slightly wetter planting areas. They form upright to spreading, medium-sized trees and also respond very well to espalier and pruning to shape so are especially suitable for smaller gardens.

PLUM

Plums are the easiest home garden fruit trees of them all. Simply prune off what’s getting out of reach and let them go. Plums are multi-branched, medium-sized, upright to spreading trees that will grow in a wide variety of well-drained soils.

Excellent for fresh fruit, stewing and jam, they are temperate zone fruit with European plums preferring a slightly cooler climate to Japanese-type plums.

European plums are slightly smaller than Japanese which have flesh which is softer, juicier and usually yellow with the exception of 'blood' plums where the flesh is red. European plums include ‘Angelina’, ‘Green Gage’, ‘Coe’s Golden Drop’, ‘Damson’, ‘President’ and Sugar Plum. Japanese-type plums with their delicious, sweet flesh feature ‘Primetime’, ‘Crimson Glo’, ‘Santa Rosa’ and ‘Mariposa’.
