ROLL WITH THE SHADE

Increasing usability at the Beaumont Bowling Club, a new retractable shade system gives control to the players.

Recently undergoing upgrades to its facilities, Beaumont Bowling Club, located in Linden Park, South Australia, is now able to shield its bowls aficionados with the comfort and protection of new retractable shade structures. “Funded by the club, and with council support, these new shades were designed and installed by Shadeform. They retract so they are used as and when needed,” explains Anne Monceaux, Mayor of Burnside.

To protect bowlers from the harsh Australian sun and maximise use of the facilities, the Club opted to install the hugely popular Shaderunner® retractable shade system. The project site required a solution that was durable and effective in providing much-needed shade, while also being easy for the bowlers to use. In addition, it was required to span the full wide of the 36.5-metrewide bowling green with seamless support. Given the flexibility of the Shaderunner® Pro system, the team knew it could get the job done.

Shaderunner® Australia was engaged to design, manufacture and install six retractable shade systems, with three linked shades, on either end of the green. The design brief included the installation of a narrower 2.15-metre-wide shade needed near the clubhouse end of the B Green, as well as a double-sided 3.5-meter-wide shade that would shade conjoining Greens B and C.

To achieve the shaded footprint required by the club, the shades were angled to the north by three degrees. A 3D shade study was completed, with drawings produced to satisfy the club’s requirements and ensure the new shade system would provide adequate shade at the right angles.

To guarantee the shade structures could achieve what was required, engineering was performed to qualify the linked Shaderunner® systems to span the total 36.5 metres required of the project. The linked Shaderunner® systems provide a mammoth 210 square metres of retractable shade — on demand!

Comprised of four steel T posts with engineered footings and a durable two-pack coating, marine grade stainless steel wires, pulleys, tensioning fittings, control cords and cleats, the Shaderunner® system is built to handle the Australian climate.

The individual fabric sails are easily extended and retracted independently utilising the cord system and can be operated by a single person. Each of the linked systems has high-strength tensile running wires with a series of quality custom ball bearing yachting pulleys offering slick, low-friction movement and a dependable operating system that provides years of trouble-free shade with minimal maintenance.

Offering premium UV protection along with shade and thermal comfort, all Shaderunner® sails are manufactured from a range of rigorously tested fabrics, from 95 percent polyester mesh to waterproof PVC. They are mould resistant and available in a wide range of colours.

Suitable for a range of applications from domestic to commercial, the Beamont Bowling Club project is proof positive of Shaderunner’s® flexibility and aesthetic appeal.
