FIT FOR A QUEEN
10 November 2016
Undertaking a challenge for the Queen Victoria Market redevelopment, Draffin Street Furniture has come through with a concept suite that meets the area’s agricultural heritage.
Draffin Street Furniture was approached by the City of Melbourne, in partnership with the Queen Victoria Market, to develop a range of urban infrastructure as part of renewal plans for the city’s oldest trade market.
In operation since 1878, the Queen Victoria Market is a much-loved historical fixture in the heart of Melbourne. Currently undergoing a renewal, the Market will be restored to its former glory while implementing some modern improvements, with an eye to maintaining the Market’s unique atmosphere and authenticity. The refreshed open-air market will provide better facilities for traders and a more enjoyable experience for the thousands of visitors the Market welcomes each year.
Given that the Queen Victoria Market plays such an important part in the heritage of Melbourne, the Council created a design that would respect the area’s history and yet still serve the goals of the renewal program. Having developed a concept for the range, Council turned to Draffin to refine, manufacture and install the suite to fit the following attributes.
- Reflect the agricultural aesthetic of the Market’s heritage
- Constructed as freestanding units that can be repositioned when required
- Durable and maintenance free
The test case suite consists of designs for a bench, planter box and seat. Constructed of Black Butt timber and stainless steel, the Market suite is durable and attractive, and all units are moveable to allow the space to be utilised for a number of activities when required. Made on a large scale, both to work with the proportions of the space and to accommodate large crowds, the build was particularly challenging.
Required to house mature trees and incorporate sufficient watering and drainage systems, the planter boxes were especially testing. Weighing in at close to 1 ton, without soil or plants, these fixtures make a statement that defines the space and provides the means to offer much-needed shade for the facility.
Though large and heavy by design, the Queen Victoria Market suite was a challenge Draffin was able to meet on time and deliver to a very satisfied client.
