DALI-ESQUE VIEWING
08 Jan 2016
A unique observation deck design owes as much to the surrealist works of Salvador Dali as it does to modern day engineering.

‘Eye of Rock’ is a conceptual design for the Viewpoint in Pulpit Rock competition hosted by Rethinking Architecture. The proposal would sit atop Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) some 600 meters above Lysefjorden near Forsand, Norway.

Fly architecture, creator of the project, based their concept on Salvador Dali’s famous ‘The Persistence of Memory’ painting.
In order to form the observation deck a section of the cliff would be dug out. In the cavity, a grandstand is provided with a massive aluminum and glass protective structure — the ‘eye’ — that stretches high over the seating. The roof allows for visitation regardless of weather. In addition, the curved glass surface has a special coating that works in combination with augmented reality technologies. Such would be used to provide viewers with other information including regional facts, current forecast, and the like.
