GREEN GROWTH IN SHANGHAI

The 15,000sqm building is expected to receive a 3-star Green Building Label - the best energy performance rating available in China.

Created as the “landmark in [the] overall plan,” the Flower Building comprises four towers that appear to telescope upwards, with each staggered floor increasing in size to create solar shading.

The top level of all four towers is merged together into the shape of a four-petaled flower with a cutout in the middle that allows light to pass through to the central courtyard. The building’s white facade, made up of light yet highly insulated GRC panels, is punctuated by large windows and is rounded to minimize material use and to optimize views.

Commissioned by Sincere Property Group, MVRDV’s mixed-use masterplan at Hongqiao was selected as the winner in a 2013 competition. In addition to Flower Building, the expansive 110,000sqm business park will include nine more green-roofed energy-efficient office buildings.

All the architecture at Hongqiao Central Business District is designed to meet the highest standards of the Chinese Green Building Label and will feature high-performance insulation, natural ventilation, rainwater collection, permeable road surfaces, access to public transit, and will help reduce the urban heat island effect.
