Justin Morton, Managing Partner of Sure Green, brings over 25 years of expertise in horticulture, turf and landscaping to his thriving commercial landscaping business. Working with councils, state governments, and industries such as retirement, education, industrial, and airports, Sure Green maintains numerous high-profile sites. Currently, one of Justin’s clients is Leppington Anglican College, where his team oversees grounds maintenance. To keep the college's extensive lawns in top condition, Sure Green installed the Husqvarna Automower® 550 EPOS robotic mower. Husqvarna spoke with Justin to learn more about his decision.
What is the ethos behind Sure Green, what influences your decisions as Sure Green’s managing partner?
As a business rooted in environmental stewardship, Sure Green is guided by a commitment to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These goals offer a valuable framework for responsible business practices, enabling us to make informed, impactful decisions that reduce our environmental footprint and enhance sustainability across all areas of our work.
How do these United Nations objectives shape the way you approach landscaping?
Our main objectives as a landscape business are to reduce noise pollution, waste, and chemical use, along with cutting emissions from petrol-fuelled machinery. By addressing these key impacts, we aim to lessen our environmental footprint.
What made you look at Husqvarna Automower® robotic lawn mowers?
With those environmental impacts in mind, about a year ago, I began exploring autonomous mowers to help maintain some of our sites. Like Sure Green, many businesses, councils, and government bodies are committed to reducing their environmental footprint, and I saw this technology as a promising step forward in that direction.
How has the use of Husqvarna Automower® robotic mowers affected the way Sure Green approaches landscape maintenance?
Leppington Anglican College serves as a prime example of our success with the Automower® 550 EPOS. It was the first site where we implemented this robotic mower to manage the grounds, and it now handles all turf areas autonomously. Each evening, when the students leave, the mower silently tends to the lawns, leaving them freshly cut by morning.
This approach has significantly streamlined our operations. Without the need for a ride-on mower, my team can focus on essential tasks like leaf blowdowns, weeding, edge cutting, and line trimming—maximising efficiency on every visit.
By incorporating robotic mowers, we're enhancing how we deploy staff. Although they no longer mow manually, team members play a critical role in setting up, maintaining, and adjusting the mowers, including blade changes and schedule updates. Rather than replacing roles, this technology offers valuable opportunities for staff development. We prioritise upskilling, with robotics training incorporated into our staff development plans to ensure they’re prepared for the future of landscaping.
How has the Husqvarna Automower® robotic mower benefited Leppington Anglican College?
The Automower® 550 EPOS mower has already delivered notable benefits. Since it operates frequently and removes only a small amount of grass with each pass, there are no visible clippings left behind, and we’re seeing thicker, healthier turf. With daily mowing, the grass benefits from more consistent nitrogen input, reducing our need for additional fertilisers and naturally enhancing the turf's green vitality.
In rain-soaked areas—like those managed by councils or smaller schools without extensive drainage—these robotic mowers have proven especially advantageous. Unlike traditional mowers, they leave no wheel marks, maintaining a pristine surface even in wet conditions.
For the school, the Automower® has been a more economical solution. Previously, lawn maintenance could only occur on weekends to avoid disrupting the students, resulting in higher labor costs. Now, the grounds are mowed overnight, ensuring they’re freshly cut each morning while keeping student safety paramount.
