HOMESTYLE AGED CARE
Homestyle Aged Care facility wanted a sculpture installation for the new dementia care annex located at the Melville Grange facility in Berwick, Victoria.
The brief they provided Entanglements was to produce a design that utilises colourful shapes. Helen Neyland, Entanglements’ head of design, drew upon her experiences with family members who experience dementia and recalled that balls were used in therapy sessions. She fondly remembers playing a gentle game of catch with her beloved grandmother who suffered from this disease.
After tinkering with a collection of three-dimensional shapes. Helen settled on a design that consists of a collection of spheres in various sizes and colours, balancing vertically. The colours are soothing, providing interest when viewed from inside the building and offering a tactile experience for residences when enjoying the garden.
101 MALING ROAD CANTERBURY
At the end of 2018, Entanglements was approached by KUD Architects, an award-winning Melbourne based architectural firm. KUD had three months remaining on their 101 Maling Road project prior to handover and required a set of vertical sculptures to complement three individual lightwells.
As time was of the essence, KUD was seeking sculptures that were prefabricated and ready to go. The team at Entanglements drew up a few options and tried a variety of sculptures within each space. They discovered that it was difficult to choose a readymade piece that aptly suited the design of the lightwells and went back to the drawing board.
After liaising with the inhouse welder, the team came up with a solution that would not only suit the project’s overall design, but could be fabricated well before it was due to be handed over. A simple set of tall sapling trees of various lengths and widths constructed from steel rods was created. This adhered to KUD’s request of having a set of vertical sculptures that could be produced relatively quickly by the welder and would greatly enhance the space.
The team then got to work on some quick renders and construction drawings for KUD’s approval. Once the architects were satisfied, they set about creating this little ‘forest’.
With a quick turnaround and delivery, the sculptures were then installed with ease. The final result pleased not only Entanglements and KUD but also the residents of this amazing new build.
The team at Entanglements understand that every project is unique, they listen to the needs of the client and provide solutions that go beyond the practical and the aesthetic to fully meet your needs.
