SHADING THE FUTURE

Outdoor spaces play a crucial role in fostering community engagement, relaxation and learning. Recognising the need for a functional yet stylish solution, a recent project at council-run community farm Edendale Farm successfully integrated a modern cantilever shade structure to provide optimal protection while maintaining an open and welcoming atmosphere.

A PRACTICAL SOLUTION FOR SUN AND RAIN

Outdoor seating and presentation areas at the community farm were often underutilised due to extreme sun exposure, particularly during peak hours. Additionally, unpredictable rain showers frequently interrupted activities, limiting the use of the space. To address these concerns, an innovative cantilever shade structure was designed and installed, offering both sun and rain protection without obstructing movement or visibility.

Multiple shade options were initially considered, including shade sails and umbrellas. While these alternatives provided most of the benefits. Ultimately, the cantilever shade structure was chosen as the best solution based on cost-effectiveness, durability, and its ability to meet the farm’s specific requirements.

Maximising space utilisation, the cantilevered design minimises the number of support columns. This approach enhances accessibility and creates an open, airy feel that complements the natural surroundings of the farm.

High-quality waterproof fabric ensures all-weather protection, allowing the space to remain functional regardless of changing conditions. Carefully calculated placement guarantees that seating and steps remain shaded during the hottest part of the day, enhancing visitor comfort and encouraging year-round outdoor use.
