STREETBOND™ 3D CROSSING
13 Dec 2018
Using Streetbond™, MPS Paving has created an eye-popping 3D crossing that appears to ‘float’ off the road, encouraging drivers to slow down for pedestrians and improving road safety.
Located north of the Melbourne CBD in the suburb of Fitzroy, a new 3D crossing has been installed on the corner of Best and Scotchmer Streets. Yarra City Council, who conducted a study in the area in response to community concerns regarding pedestrian safety and traffic and parking management in the area, commissioned the crossing after identifying an opportunity to improve road safety.
Council worked with local supermarket Piedimonte’s to develop a new crossing concept, arriving at a three-dimensional walkway, which is reportedly the first of its kind in Victoria. From an angle, the crossing resembles solid blocks rising out of the bitumen, paving the way for pedestrians to use it as a bridge. The concept and the location provided Council with an opportunity to improve road safety in a fun and engaging way. The low cost and quick installation time also meant immediate benefits to the community.
MPS Paving Systems Australia implemented the 3D crossing design using Streetbond™ coatings in White, Slate, Timeless Grey and Endless Dusk to create the 3D effect.
The StreetBond™ textured coating and paving paint range is a practical solution to bringing softness and colour to otherwise hard-formed surfaces and structures. It also provides peace of mind for commercial set ups and areas with high foot traffic by increasing the slip resistance on a variety of flooring surfaces. Suitable for a range of applications, Streetbond™ is a versatile solution for creating colourful and safe surfaces.
3D crossings are used in many places in the world and offer an interesting approach to tackling road safety concerns. Since its installation, Yarra City Council has received good community feedback on the crossing and hopes to install more of them in the future.
