Designed for the 15th annual Serpentine Pavilion, this playful plastic structure brings a welcome dose of mischief to London.
This year, a psychedelic labyrinth has been selected as the 15th annual Serpentine Pavilion in London. The temporary pavilion is envisioned as a colourful, plastic cocoon of interconnected spaces; it is designed as if an exotic caterpillar had nibbled on a magic mushroom before spinning its chrysalis.
Designed by SelgasCano, the pavilion is made using a double-layered shell of opaque fluorine webbing stretched over a framework of interlocking tunnels. The plastic will filter the daylight like a stained-glass window, casting coloured light into the interior spaces. The double shell creates a corridor between the inner and outer layer of the pavilion, and visitors will be able to enter through multiple openings in the sides.
"We sought a way to allow the public to experience architecture through simple elements: structure, light, transparency, shadows, lightness, form, sensitivity, change, surprise, colour and materials," commented the team from SelgasCano.
The Serpentine Galleries commission a different architect to create the pavilion each year, offering them the chance to create their first built structure in England.
The 2015 Serpentine Pavilion will open on 25 June and close on 18 October, 2015. It will host a number of parties and public talks, as well as a series of evening events.
