Fremantle Esplanade Skatepark

The opening of the Fremantle Esplanade Skatepark at the Esplanade Youth Plaza in April 2014 was considered one of the most monumental moments in Australian skateboarding history. But it meant much more than that for the locals - skaters and non-skaters.

The plaza has transformed for the community what was traditionally a thoroughfare into a positive, active, buzzing hub. Public Outdoor Ping Pong (POPP) were proud to have two of their outdoor ping pong tables installed alongside climbing walls, parkour training facilities and chill-out areas. The POPP tables were also part of a community-driven art workshop to give greater ownership of the tables and the space to the locals. In Western Australia, the widespread support for this type of activated youth space is mirrored across the country and POPP looks forward to being involved in many more similar style projects.
